Hi! I'm Jolin Cheng. Coming from a journalism background, I've developed skills in effective communication, analytical thinking, quantitative analysis, and digital marketing. My recent experience as a UX researcher in a consulting company sparked my interest in UX design. I love communicating with people from diverse backgrounds and using different methodologies to evaluate hypotheses and define solutions.
It was a windy October in Boston. I was a journalism university student at my junior year, carrying a hand-held mic and a lavalier mic in my backpack, with a large camera around my neck. I wandered amidst the sea of lunchtime customers – the two hours of the day when food trucks were open, looking for an opportunity to shoot inside a food truck. I began with an intimidating line, "Hi! I'm a journalism student," followed up with another, "I would like to learn about (not buy)..." After waiting alongside the long line of customers, I was granted access into the truck! I squeezed into the tiny space, navigated around pans and order tickets, carefully balanced my equipment, and chatted with the busy staff, all while trying not to risk a fried camera.
Through multiple attempts to "get into the truck," my fascination with the storytelling process endured. Yet, beyond reporting, I yearned not only to explain what working in a food truck was like but also to answer "how to make a food truck work" for the owners, the customers, and the streets they parked on. I want to become a storyteller who solves problems and creates solutions.
This led me to my first experience as a UX researcher and passion for UX design. The skillsets indeed overlap, and the journey never truly ends – an ongoing exploration of methodologies, UX and product thinking, data analytics, design tools, design theories, communication skills, and more. So here I am, waiting for another opportunity to get into the truck, this time in New York.
